Visual Culture in Chinese

Posted by lostincci on August 20, 2007

visual-culture-chinese-cover-small.jpgDr Richard Howells’ Visual Culture is now available in Chinese. The book was originally published in England and the United States by Cambridge’s Polity Press. Now, the Guangxi Normal University Press have published a 2007 edition in Chinese simplified characters. The cover remains very similar, though, with a digitally re-worked version of Jan Van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini Marriage” from the National Gallery in London. Originally published in 2003, Visual Culture has now been re-printed three times in English, and is a set book for Dr Howells’ visual culture course for the MA in Cultural and Creative Industries.

The Creative Innovation Unit, based on London’s South Bank, has launched a programme of International Placements for Creative Entrepreneurs, which may be of interest to readers of Lost in CCI.

The programme is described as ‘a brand new international opportunity for emerging and mid-career leaders in the creative and cultural sectors. Three month international placements will build leadership capacity, expose each participant to new creative models and offer an increased breadth in understanding diverse cultures.’

We are most amused

Posted by lostincci on August 7, 2007

Current MA CCI student Chiara Meloni wrote to invite readers of Lost in CCI to a range of events at the Shoreditch Festival, where she is doing her internship.

This festival is produced by Shoreditch Trust, a community-run regeneration agency.

Chiara recommended in particular Victorian Values, performed by the Ministry of Burlesque at Hoxton Hall this Wednesday and Thursday (8th and 9th August).

“Victorian Values is a full length burlesque show sympathetic to the early British form of the 1830s. It is an original work with bold content and imaginative characters who spoof and burlesque British Society as it was, and perhaps still is.”

Venue: Hoxton Hall, 130 Hoxton Street, N1 www.hoxtonhall.co.uk
Time: 8pm
Tickets: Full price £15, Concs £7.50 Shoreditch residents £3.50
Book on www.victorianvalues.info or email Chiara@shoreditchtrust.org.uk

All the World’s an Internship

Posted by lostincci on August 2, 2007

reeta-at-shakespeares-globe-2-august-2007-smaller.jpg

Lost in CCI caught up with MA student Reeta Ruotsalainen who is currently interning at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre on Bankside. Although Reeta has a background in drama, she is not working on the production side but is working instead with the Friends of Shakespeare’s Globe, which helps support the running of the theatre.

The Globe was founded by the American actor and director Sam Wanamaker as a recreation of the original London theatre in which Shakespeare’s plays were performed. In addition to a professional company, the Globe boasts a museum and an education programme -all of which combine to show how Shakespeare’s plays were presented in the bard’s own time.

We photographed Reeta in the auditorium, which is currently staging productions of “Love’s Labour’s Lost”, “Othello” and “The Merchant of Venice”.

The Digital Divide

Posted by lostincci on August 2, 2007

welcome-to-bbc-small.jpgCCI’s Dr Richard Howells was a live guest on BBC Radio 4’s “You and Yours” programme on August 1st. He was part of a discussion on the “digital divide” and social exclusion from the internet.

He took the view that while of course campaigns for digital inclusivity were to be welcomed, we should at the same time be cautious in the seemingly headlong rush to digitise every aspect of everyone’s lives. It was important that information technology did not completely replace more established and sometimes more effective channels of communication. While some contributors welcomed the “electronic village hall”, Dr Howells argued that we should not at the same time demolish the real thing. We still had to include the “Basildon Bond” generation and not simply substitute one “hard to reach” group for another.
