Thinking About a PhD?

Posted by lostincci on March 31, 2008

MA CCI students who are thinking about applying to stay on and study for a PhD with us have until until 1 May to apply for the King’s Alumni Awards.

These include bursaries for alumni who wish to continue their postgraduate studies at King’s from the 2008/09 academic session. This means that as a taught postgraduate student you can apply for postgraduate research funding for up to 3 years for PhD programmes subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarships would cover 20% of tuition fees.

Further details are on the Graduate School’s Funding Database at: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/graduate/funding/database/view/194/ For more on studying for a PhD with us, go to: http://kcl.ac.uk/schools/humanities/cci/phd.html

The person to talk to about PhD study within the programme is Centre Director Dr Richard Howells.

Kudos from Amsterdam

Posted by lostincci on March 26, 2008

wendy-giving-presentation-amsterdam-11-12-07-2-inch.jpgKudos to Culture, Media and Creative Industries PhD student Wendy Burke, who is pictured here giving a very well-received paper at the European Identity and the Second World War, 1939 to 1970, conference in Amsterdam.

Although she is fluent in Dutch (a rare thing for a British PhD student) Wendy spoke in English on “Re-writing resistance: The shifting image of occupation in Dutch films about World War Two from the 1960s and 1970s”.

Readers will recall that Wendy gave an overview of her research to CCI MA students last semester as part of our research seminars series. She remains willing and able to give advice to any current MA students who may be interested in Doctoral research with us in the future.

New and Improved Advertising Newsletter

Posted by lostincci on March 26, 2008

Any CCI students interested in a career in advertising should check out the latest edition of AdStudent, the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising’s online newsletter. This provides students with tips, insights and opportunities on how to get into the advertising industry, and what to expect when you get there!

This edition also contains details of a competition for students to win a summer placement in a top advertising agency. It’s mainly aimed at undergraduates, but Lost in CCI has been assured that our MA students are still welcome to apply. We do, after all have a connection: Centre Director Dr Richard Howells was one of the judges for the IPA national advertising awards last summer.

If you would like to read the newsletter online, go to: http://newsweaver.co.uk/ipaadvertising/index000246181.cfm?x=bckjTSj,b7kLgngq

And if you would like to receive this newsletter again, email Louise Rome at the IPA at louise@ipa.co.uk to ask to be put on the AdStudent subscriber list.

Hydrogen fuel cell-powered theatre

A story about the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered theatre recently caught Lost in CCI’s eye, from The Stage (via the Arts Journal):

“North London’s Arcola Theatre has become the first venue to install an environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel cell to power the site. The 5kw fuel source, which operates almost silently and produces nothing but electricity and clean water, will run the theatre’s cafe-bar and selected main house productions.

“It has been installed in the foyer of the theatre, accompanied by displays describing the benefits and challenges of the new technology.”
