“Between fan culture and copyright infringement: manga scanlation” is based on her successful presentation at last year’s CMCI symposium on anime and manga.

Hye-Kyung is already known for her work on cultural policy and creative industries, but this latest article also underlines her interest in the way that consumers (re)produce culture for non-commercial reasons, and so has been investigating fan translation of animation and TV drama as well as scanlation.

You can find her article in Media, Culture & Society 31(6), pp 1011-1022, and also online at http://mcs.sagepub.com

It is hoped that this group will develop means to evaluate the impact of copyright on the creative industries, and to consider the variable impacts across different regions and nation states.

Andy played a major role in writing the UNESCO’s “Framework for cultural statistics” which as formally adopted by UNESCO earlier this year. Raymond Williams famously said that culture was one of the most difficult words in the English language; so, a definition is no mean feat! Andy also played a significant role in drafting UNCTAD’s 2008 “Creative Economy” report which sought to create a benchmark for policy and debate about the cultural economy in both the developed and developing world.

Congratulations again to CMCI’s recent PhD graduate Dr Joaquim Negreiros. He’s now won a post-doctoral award from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, the public Portuguese institution that supports scientific research.

The grant will enable Joaquim to carry out a research project focusing on the connections between citizenship and family life, and how these are affected by different living arrangements.

This will in turn involve the close study of two groups of people: those in “conventional” family units and those in “solo living” situations.

At the end of the project, both a book and an international conference are planned. Joaquim’s doctoral study at CMCI was supervised by Dr Richard Howells.
