Creative work: all it’s cracked up to be?

Posted by lostincci on September 3, 2007

Creative Work is the title of a symposium organised by the Cultural and Media Industries Research Centre (CuMIRC) at the University of Leeds for 18th October 2007.

The symposium will question the notion that the creative industries are ‘not just economically beneficial but represent a new relation between work and individual fulfilment’, a ‘liberating force, breaking with the grey bureaucratic drudgery of the 9-to-5 jobs of the twentieth century’. It will examine studies of the creative workplace that ‘have revealed new forms of control and exploitation’, and research into creative industry clusters that have revealed ‘high levels of insecurity and inequality’.

Speakers include Professor Justin O’Connor of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds, and David Hesmondhalgh, author of The Cultural Industries.

The symposium will take place at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries,
University Of Leeds, LS2 9JT. The conference fee is £40 and £15 for postgraduates. Places are limited and should be booked in advance. To book and to arrange payment, you should contact Haili Heaton.
