Jenny M’Baye PhD

CMCI is glad to congratulate Jenny M’Baye on passing her PhD viva on 27th Oct, subject to some minor corrections.

The thesis was entitled “Reconsidering cultural entrepreneurship: hip hop music economy and social change in Francophone West Africa (Burkina Faso and Senegal)”. It was an investigation of West African hip hop musical practitioners framed by the notion of “community of practice”. The situated practices of these cultural workers and their music production ecology are investigated – methodologically – from a grounded perspective of cultural economy and entrepreneurship in order to grasp the originality of their materiality and aesthetics. The empirical focus for this thesis research is two Francophone West African urban locales, Dakar and Ouagadougou; the case study locations are ‘experientially situated’ and seventy semi-structured interviews conducted with a range of participants both directly and indirectly involved in hip hop music economy.

Jenny is registered at LSE, but Andy Pratt had continued to supervise her remotely since he moved to KCL. Jenny’s examiners were Dr Mark Banks (OU) and Prof Jenny Robinson (UCL).
