Dr Ruth Adams appears at ‘Gothic: Culture, subculture, counterculture’ conference.

Posted by lostincci on March 11, 2013

Last week Dr Ruth Adams gave a paper at a conference held at an unusual and extraordinary venue. Strawberry Hill House is an 18th century Gothic revival mansion in South West London, built by the writer and politician Horace Walpole. This was a fitting site given the theme of the conference, ‘Gothic: Culture, subculture, counterculture’, which was organised and hosted by St Mary’s University College, Twickenham. The event was wide-ranging, looking at the Gothic in contexts of politics, history, literature, art, architecture, cinema, television, gaming, music, design and fashion over a period of three centuries. Ruth appeared on a panel focused on Gothic subcultures, and gave a paper which explored the relationship between the Gothic and the queer in the work of the German music project Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows. Other speakers on the panel presented their research on contemporary Gothic subcultures in Germany and Japan.
